TEN EASY STEPS TO WRITING YOUR PAPER (RESEARCH/PERSUASIVE ESSAY PAPER)
1. Pick a topic.
Too broad: health
Narrower: health care (still too broad)
Even narrower: American health care (getting better)
Even more narrow: Universal health coverage for all American (just right)
**If your paper is persuasive, you will need to decide what your viewpoint or opinion is for your specific topic. Example: All Americans deserve and need universal health care to lead healthy, productive lives.
2. Find sources of information for your topic. Try to find sources that are unbiased/objective (not trying to sell your something), credible/trustworthy, current/recent, and on a reading level you can comprehend. Don't forget you can use documentaries, interviews with knowledgeable people, and books. For articles, find these using www.ncwiseowl.org.
3. Now that you have found your sources, go to each source and read enough to determine if that source will have any useful information. Useful means it provides relevant evidence for your topic.
4. Visit easybib.com and create an account. As you find sources you plan to use, create a citation on www.easybib.com or www.citationmachine.net and save these citations in your account. Enter all information needed into the fields, so that the citations will be formatted fully and correctly. Without your citation, you can not use information from that source.
5. When you find relevant evidence, make a note of the passage or sentence. Copy it word for word in quotation marks. Put your notes on index cards, in Google docs, or on notebook paper. Indicate which source each note is from and a page number if the page was numbered.
6. Now you can, write a thesis. If you seek my help, we will work together to write a correct thesis that reflects your topic/issue and the subtopics.
7. Then, complete your outline using your thesis and evidence notes.
